Soaring again! Four Honey-buzzards rescued and released in Malta
They became trapped inside building while making their way through Malta.

BirdLife Malta has recently announced the successful rescue and release of four Honey-buzzards (Kuċċard) that became trapped inside buildings while making their way through Malta on their annual migration.

The birds, which are among the many raptors that pass over the Maltese Islands during the autumn migration season, were discovered in distress after being unable to find their way out of urban structures. BirdLife Malta intervened swiftly, ensuring that each bird was carefully recovered and transferred to their sanctuaries for rest and rehabilitation.

Following a short period of care, during which the birds regained their strength, the four Honey-buzzards were safely released back into the wild. Their release allows them to continue their incredible journey southwards, where they will spend the winter months.

Honey-buzzards are a protected species in Malta and across Europe, and their presence highlights the islands’ importance as a vital stopover point on the central Mediterranean flyway. However, migration season can often prove dangerous, with birds facing risks such as exhaustion, disorientation, and illegal hunting.

Thank you, Birdlife Malta!
