Save a life! Urgent need for blood on the Maltese Islands as donors become scarce
The shortage could affect patients’ care.
Malta’s National Blood Transfusion Service has issued an urgent call for people to donate blood as not many donors are showing up lately.
“Although yesterday we made [a] call for blood using all our means available (media, emails, fb, app, SMS and telephone calls) not more than 22 blood donors turned up. This is too little and patients’ care will be affected if the situation remains unchanged,” they share.
“Please come to donate blood at your earliest,” they appeal to the public, thanking them in advance. The National Blood Transfusion Service is situated in Telghet Gwardamangia in Pieta and is open from Monday to Sunday from 8am to 6pm, including public holidays.

Interested in donating?
The transfusion service has blood drives coming up as follows:
1. Friday 7th February at the Floriana Education Department
2. Sunday 9th February at the St Venera Scout Group
3. Monday 10th February at St Vincent De Paule Residence
4. Tuesday 11th February at Gozo Xewkija Berga

If you cannot make it to one of these blood drives, you can always just pop in to donate. You must present your ID card or driver’s licence and be between 17 (with parental consent) to 65 years of age. Check out their full ‘Become a Donor’ page for more information on what you need to do before and after you donate and certain requirements needed.
