Sailing beauty! Set your sights on the majestic Amerigo Vespucci, docked at Valletta
Renowned marine biologist and professor Alan Deidun, usually known for sharing fascinating snapshots of life beneath the waves, turned his lens toward something a little closer to the surface this time – the magnificent Amerigo Vespucci. Currently docked at Pinto Wharf in the Grand Harbour, Valletta, the iconic vessel is welcoming visitors onboard for free today (Monday 28th April) as part of its global tour.
Professor Deidun shared a series of stunning photos from his visit aboard the Amerigo Vespucci, offering followers a glimpse of the incredible craftsmanship and grandeur of the ship. Built in 1931 for the Italian Navy, the Amerigo Vespucci is one of the largest sailing vessels currently navigating the Mediterranean, weighing in at an impressive 4,000 tons.
With a towering 54-metre mast and a crew of around 250 needed to manage its vast sails, the ship is as much a marvel of engineering as it is a breathtaking sight. Beyond its majestic structure and timeless elegance, one particular detail captured Professor Deidun’s attention: a beautifully inscribed wooden panel bearing the motto – ‘Non chi comincia ma quel che persevera’, which translates to “Not he who begins but he who perseveres’ – a powerful and inspiring message for all who set foot aboard.
