What an iconic landmark!

Lyndsey Grima

The historic Palazzo Ferreria in Valletta, now home to the Ministry for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, has undergone an extensive internal restoration. The project, completed in less than a year, represents an investment of €500,000 and highlights the importance of preserving Malta's architectural heritage.

The restoration focused on the palace's entrance, inner courtyard, and areas adjacent to it. Significant work was carried out on the iron, wood, and tile structures, ensuring that all updates remained faithful to the historical and architectural essence of this iconic building. The renovated features now stand as a testament to the grandeur and craftsmanship of this 19th-century landmark.

The inauguration of the project was recently held, and the event also marked the launch of a new book on the history of Palazzo Ferreria, written in Maltese by Professor Raymond Mangion.

Over the years, this building was changed from a foundry where swords and cannons that lead to destruction were made, to a palace in which today hundreds of social justice measures are designed.

The recently completed project is part of a broader effort to restore the palace. Previous initiatives included restoring the building’s façade and installing a stunning lighting system, which has become a highlight of Valletta’s cityscape. This lighting has captured the attention of locals and visitors alike, often featured in photos shared across various media platforms.

The restoration ensures that Palazzo Ferreria remains not only a functional government space but also a cultural and historical jewel in Valletta, highlighting Malta’s commitment to preserving its rich heritage.
