An American policeman of Maltese descent has tragically passed away after being involved in a fatal helicopter crash.
Nicholas Vella, aged 44, had worked for the Huntington Beach Police Department for 14 years.
The crash occurred last Saturday when Nicholas and another officer boarded the helicopter to head to Newport Beach, where a fight was reported to be underway.
An investigation revealed that, before crashing into the sea, the pilot reported that there was some damage to the helicopter.
CCTV footage from a nearby home confirmed that the helicopter lost control before impact.
Nicholas sadly passed away that same evening, although the pilot is currently still being treated in hospital.
The Huntington Beach Police Department announced the tragic news on social media.
"It is with tremendous sorrow that we announce the passing of Officer Nicholas Vella, a 14-year veteran of HBPD. Officer Vella died this evening after our police helicopter, HB-1, crashed into the waters off Newport while responding to a call for service,” the police department wrote.
It followed the announcement with a heartwarming message to the town’s community, saying, "Officer Vella served our community with honor & dignity. The display of love & appreciation we have seen over the last 24 hours has been overwhelming but fitting for someone as great as Nick. We continue to thank everyone for their kindness as we mourn the loss of our brother."
Nicholas is survived by a wife and daughter.
Our sincere condolences go out to Nicholas’ family and friends.
