Reach out, they’re there to listen! A national suicide crisis line is in the works

The Maltese Islands may soon have a national suicide crisis line, as mental health professionals come together to discuss a way forward in the hopes of making this happen.

Dr Mark Xuereb, a member of Crisis Resolution Malta (CRM) reportedly said, “A lot has already been done to tackle mental health, including suicide, but we need to work together. It’s time to stop talking and take action.”

Last month, the organisation met with His Excellency the President of Malta George Vella to discuss and promote welfare, couple therapy and the nationalising of a three-digit suicide crisis line. Dr Xuereb has long been calling for this crisis line and the setting up of a crisis resolution organisation and home treatment team, including doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and lawyers, among others.

Just yesterday, thanks to an ongoing collaboration between the CRM and the Malta Police Force, another life was saved.

In a recent post, CRM posted a photo that read, “The truth is, suicide catches everyone’s attention. It’s the actions leading up to suicide that go unnoticed.” And the crisis line will aim to help persons going through a rough time and considering ways to end their life. CRM is there to listen and help. If you’re struggling, call 9933 9966, the current free 24/7 line.

Other options include calling support line 179 or chatting online at Kellimni.com. Everyone is here to help.
