It’s not everyday that we get access to Malta’s maze of underground tunnels, and recent eerie-yet-enthralling pictures released by the Malta Railway Foundation have left us wanting more.

Despite the Maltese railway system terminating business in 1931, the Floriana tunnels were almost immediately repurposed.

Throughout the years, the structure had several uses. It served as a wartime shelter, the entrance stairs refashioned into a classroom and even housed several communication, electrical and television cables, most of which stretched to reach the island’s extremities.

The Malta Railway Foundation and the Floriana Local Council have joined forces to restore the tunnels into a proportion of their former glory, and guess what?

They are allowing public access to the tunnels this very Sunday, as part of the Genna tal-Gonna Festival in Floriana, which means you can actually go underground to explore!
