Putting the Go in Gozo! Over one million people have already travelled to Gozo this year
Figures show the number of crossings has increased since last year.
The volume of people who have travelled to Malta’s sister-island of Gozo so far this year has gone up. The latest information from the National Statistics Office shows a total of 1,146,490 passengers made the journey between January 1st and March 31st. That’s a 2.3 per cent increase on the same period last year.
Now that’s a lot of selfies!
All the arrows point up
The highest number of passengers was recorded in March (477,945) who made up 41.7 per cent of the total of the first quarter, while the number of vehicles travelling between Malta and Gozo increased by 7.1 per cent, totalling 363,460.
The number of trips taken was 5,449 - an increase of 3.6 per cent over the same period in 2018. Again, most of those journeys took place in March (2,034) and made up 37.3 per cent of the total crossings for the quarter.
Here comes the weekend!
It’s no surprise that the highest volume of movement was recorded at weekends. Ċirkewwa was busiest on Fridays (104,495) and Saturdays (98,900), whereas the highest numbers from Mġarr in Gozo were recorded on Sundays (117,125) and Saturdays (83,906). These numbers are expected to continue to grow now that summer has (amost) arrived.
Make sure to plan your crossing if you’re heading there is weekend!
