Provocative or lazy? Bizarre fountain design in Gozo leaves the web baffled
Is it social commentary masked as new-age art or just a half-arsed job?

A picture of a new fountain at the Water Services Corporation offices in Xewkija, Gozo has been making the rounds online, and just like every other local internet user, we are slightly amused and massively confused!

Instead of the usual simple metal design in the middle of a small pond, this fountain has a different centrepiece: a random and sizeable assortment of bricks.

Online users were quick to post their thoughts, and most interpretations seemed to point in the same direction: an accurate depiction of nature being destroyed by our incessant quest of construction. Humour was also rife in the comments section, with several doubting the possible longevity of the fountain, suggesting that the bricks might easily be stolen by builders in need.

The question remains; is it social commentary or a poorly executed piece of work?

When she’s not having a quarter-life crisis, Caroline is either drawing in a café, frittering her salary on sushi or swearing at traffic in full-on Gozitan. There is also the occasional daytime drink somewhere in the equation. Or two. A creative must be allowed at least one vice.
