“Pray for the cave” – Local pub owner speaks out about struggles with COVID-19 measures
This is so sad!

Yesterday, the government announced new measures for the tourism sector to follow in order to start operating once again. However, one pub owner has expressed her disappointment with measures implemented for this sector throughout this pandemic period.

“I am disappointed by the measures that were taken to help the catering industry throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” Facebook user and The Beer Cave Valletta’s owner Stela Artois says in a lengthy post. “First off the 700€ grant was not enough to cover: rent, nor water/electricity bills and to top it off - this money was meant to be used for day to day living too. (Please note I personally have not received 1c yet from this scheme).”

She also notes that after “constant battling” her landlord finally agreed to lower her rent, still a costly figured but lowered nonetheless. She also shared that her staff weren’t eligible for wage supplement, adding more financial stress. “I still needed their help and they mine, during these months, so I forked out money to keep them happy and work's going on for the reopening.”

“After all this struggle and work put into this project, I will only be able to put 1 barrel (table) outside my venue during the day. No one inside. 1 single barrel outside. During the night I will probably have around 4 Barrels with 4 people on each. How is this income going to contribute to my high rent? How am I meant to live? And my staff? Are people going to pass by the little shack I'll set up outside my door to drink? Is this the right time to drink and spend money?” she says, voicing her concerns.

“From Friday I will be able to operate, but that doesn't mean I get a deduction for the upcoming month's rent. No regulations have been discussed re future rent after COVID or if rent should be halfed or completely removed during the COVID period. Opening my doors doesn’t mean I will have a flow of people.”

“How does the government expect small businesses to survive this period?
Walking through Valletta Today & confronting other business owners in Strait Street, everyone was angered by the instant regulations and measurements imposed all within 5days. Yes, measurements need to be taken and I agree but atleast, if you want to help the people, regulate rent rates AND advise people 2 weeks beforehand of regulations not 5 days beforehand.”

She ensures loyal customers that she will carry on The Beer Cave brand. “If not in the current cave, get ready for another awesome venue (right after I pay off my debt). I am still opening on Friday, and I'm hoping that my landlord will realise that there is no way I can cope with these expenses...Pray for the cave.”
