Pastizzi, minestra, or kusksu? Maltese winter favourite foods as listed by locals
Ah winter, the time for indulging in the best meals and treats to warm up our chilly bodies from the winter cold. In a recent post on the Facebook group The Kcina (RUBS), locals commented with their favourite winter comfort foods. Yes, winter is coming and we can’t wait for all the warm comfort foods we’ll be tasting once again.
1. ‘Platt minestra’
Minestrone or minestra will soon be making its way back onto our dining tables as locals desire warm soups for their evening meal.
2. Hot soup with a twist
One local said she loves any type of soup, as long as it has crusty Maltese bread with butter to go along with it. #nojudgments
3. Kusksu
This traditional dish is basically made up of pasta, local ġbejniet and beans. Some even add hard boiled eggs into the mix, creating quite the filling dish.
4. Imbuljuta
Imbuljuta is a Gozitan drink usually prepared during Christmas time, but many have broken the rules and indulged in it all year round. The delish drink is a mix of chestnuts, cocoa powder and dark chocolate, sweet spices and orange zest. We’re drooling already!
5. Kawlata
The traditional Maltese pork and veggie soup is a big hit among locals during the winter months, with many families cooking big pots week in, week out.
6. Pastizzi
An obvious choice! And while it’s a year-round treat us locals love, piping hot pastizzi tend to go down nicely especially during the winter months. #TurtieraPastizziPlsThx
7. ‘Brodu bil-corned beef’
Or 'conned beef' as the Maltese like to say! While not the healthiest of winter soups, it’s definitely one of the tastiest. Corned beef, veggies and warm broth is the perfect combo.
8. Baked pasta
Baked pasta or imqarrun is another top contender for our Maltese cuisine winter favourites. A WHOLE dish of meaty goodness would be gone in one sitting in most families. Dibs on the crunchy ones!
BONUS: Whiskey and honey
Ghamillu grokk! Whiskey, while not traditionally Maltese, has become a staple part of the ‘warm’ (so to speak) part of Maltese cuisine, giving that toasty feel you need.
