Orange weather warning issued as Force 9 winds batter Malta on Carnival’s final day
It's likely that sea travel will be delayed today, as most ferries across the island aren't in operation.
With weather alerts stacking up like a rainbow on the calendar, Civil Protection Malta has issued an orange weather warning for Tuesday 17th February as very strong winds sweep across the islands.
A West to West-Northwest wind is set to reach Force 8 to 9 at its peak on Tuesday afternoon, bringing gale-force conditions across exposed areas of Malta and Gozo.
The sea will be very rough, with waves potentially reaching up to six metres in peak gusts. Coastal areas most exposed to the severe winds are expected to take the brunt of it.
Conditions should gradually improve on Wednesday, with winds decreasing to moderate levels throughout the day.
With seas turning rough to very rough, if you’re planning to travel by Gozo Channel, you’ll want to check their socials for any notes on delays. Gozo Highspeed, the Valletta ferries to Sliema & Three Cities, as well as Virtu Ferries serving Pozzallo in Sicily have cancelled all their trips for today.
Civil Protection is urging the public to take precautions, including:
- Avoid working at heights, including rooftops and balconies
- Stay away from shorelines, breakwaters and exposed coastal areas
- Secure loose outdoor objects that could be blown away
- Drive carefully, especially in open areas prone to sudden crosswinds
Authorities are urging the public to stay updated through official channels as the situation develops.
Stay safe!
