One year on: future of 19th century Attard railway station still uncertain
Authorities have been battling it out for a year now

Last year, the future of Attard’s old railway station was very much uncertain as two parties were battling it out on how the project should be tackled.

This time last year it was announced that a development proposal will likely see the structure (which has been standing since 1883) turned into a cultural information centre, with information particularly pertaining to the Three Villages (Attard, Balzan, Lija) to enhance the culture experience for tourists visiting this quaint area.

The Malta Railway Foundation objected to the proposal, saying it doesn’t reflect the original building and continues to insist that a Victorian replica should be considered at the very least. “The proposed Attard Railway Station project is not a restoration project,” the foundation said last year.

“Building a new modern place to house an Information Centre and a Public Library with an awning which has nothing to do with the old railway station. There is no comparison at all. This is not acceptable at all. We need to be more sensitive to our cultural heritage and rebuild the Attard Railway Station to the original architectural Victorian design. The Malta Railway Foundation will not be taken for a ride.”

Now, they continue to convey the same message, appealing for this project to be reconsidered. “Attard Local Council proposed to build a replica Railway Station with EU Funds. This is Attard Shame Station. Stop this project please.” Many locals are appalled at the idea that the proposed structure is being considered as a replica, as it doesn’t resemble the original Victorian style, with some even comparing it to a petrol station.
