One door closes, another opens! Spinola cat village replaced with 200-year-old tree
Our furry friends would love this new addition.
What was once a hub for some very cute felines has now been turned into a concrete jungle housing an ancient tree.
St Julian’s has been undergoing major face-lifts in recent months, but one particularly drastic change involves the famous ‘cat village’.
This spot was once home to a colony of stray cats, adorned by a plethora of colourful mini houses. Ever since the cat village was removed, however, the houses have been replaced by concrete blocks.
But hey, at least there's a tree, right?
Before the cat village was destroyed, a 60-year-old eucalyptus tree offered neighbouring houses some very well-need greenery. Now, this has been replaced by a 200-year-old Sicilian olive tree.
Of course, the cat village’s demolition was the source of ample outrage, as residents fought to save the last trace of greenery on the street.
The eucalyptus tree was removed after surrounding construction works wilted it down, forcing developers to chop it down.
After that, Spinola residents were left with nothing but a tree stump with a sad cat face spray-painted on.
Having said that, the latest addition to the former cat village has brought back some much needed greenery to the area.
Let's hope that this beauty is there to stay.
