Old photos of Isla's Victory Street show just how badly the city got damaged during WWII
The Grand Harbour area was one of the worst-hit places by enemy bombings during the course of the Second World War and it comes to no surprise that nearby cities would also suffer the brunt of these attacks.
One of the most disastrous attacks befell the city of Isla, or Senglea as it is sometimes known. Most buildings alongside Victory Street, the city's main road, were either completely destroyed or heavily damaged, with the road completely blocked.

The street was subsequently cleared up from the huge amount of rubble, with the picture below highlighting a stage in the clear-up procedure of the area. Interestingly, while adjacent buildings were almost flattened, the statue in the middle of the road remained intact.
