According to Alan Deidun, this jellyfish was first recorded in Malta around 15 years ago!
Marine biologist Alan Deidun has reported an increase in local sightings of the nomadic jellyfish (Rhopilema nomadica) - a tropical stinger known for its painful sting and disruptive impact on marine ecosystems.
The update, accompanied by a photo from Rosanne Apap, raises concern as this species has caused major problems across the eastern Mediterranean, leading to power station shutdowns, beach closures, and severe damage to fisheries during bloom events.
The nomadic jellyfish was first recorded in Maltese waters around 15 years ago by the late Shaun Arrigo, but sightings have so far remained isolated, without full-scale blooms.
Let’s hope this jellyfish does not bloom here!
