Oh no! Chinese Embassy to develop nearly 20,000 square metres of agricultural land
Citizens have already expressed their concerns.
The Chinese Embassy in Malta has reportedly revealed plans to turn nearly 20,000 square metres of agricultural land its new home.
The site, while within development zone, lies 280m away from a Special Area of Conservation within Pembroke. The special area is protected under flora, fauna, and natural habitats regulations.
The proposed location is on Suffolk Street, right behind St Catherine’s School and has the Labour Party’s Australia Hall close by that is now in a dilapidated state.

Heritage watchdogs have reportedly already warned about the development’s possible effect on nearby buildings, noting there are three buildings within a 100-metre radius. The Chinese government reportedly bought the land in 2015 from the government, amounting to about €7,880,000. The site has always been earmarked for development.
The public has until 29th April 2020 to oppose the proposal and present their representations to [email protected] with the subject subject "PA/09786/19 Objection.” So far, many citizens have voiced their opinions, urging authorities to reconsider the application.
