Maltese Olympic swimmer Sasha Gatt has once again made a splash on the international stage, breaking her own national record in the 800m freestyle at the U23 Swimming European Championships currently taking place in Šamorín, Slovakia.

Sasha achieved this incredible feat just a month after competing in the GSSE Games, that took place in Andorra at the end of May. But that’s not all – she also made history by becoming the first Maltese swimmer ever to reach a European final in this event at the U23 level.

‘Coming from a small island and lining up with the best in Europe, finishing 8th place,’ Sasha wrote on social media, adding that it felt ‘surreal’ to be back on a European final stage after last competing there in 2021 at the Junior Europeans.

Her post exuded gratitude and pride as she acknowledged the people behind her success: ‘Special thanks to my coach, Catalin Stan, for his patience and support, and to my family for their continuous encouragement.’

Sasha also expressed how driven she feels now more than ever, writing that she’s ‘a little older, stronger, and more driven than ever.’

Well done, Sasha!
