Uncorking the past! Buskett’s new interactive wine museum celebrates Malta’s grapes
Malta has just raised a toast to its rich winemaking tradition with the official opening of a new interactive centre for viticulture and oenology at Buskett. The centre is housed in a beautifully restored historic building and is now open to the public as an educational and cultural hub for all things wine and vines!

The newly opened centre – located on half a hectare of land in the lush surroundings of Buskett – features a small-scale winery, a wine physio-chemical lab, and a dedicated vineyard. Thanks to a restoration project carried out in two phases, the centre now serves as a fully equipped museum and learning space for farmers, students, wine lovers, and anyone with a passion for Maltese agriculture.
The interactive museum offers a deep dive into Malta’s viticultural history, teaching visitors about local grape varieties and providing valuable insight into sustainable growth within the sector. It not only celebrates wine as a product but also places a spotlight on the cultural and scientific efforts that have helped shape the local industry.
A key feature of the centre’s work is its research on 17 indigenous Maltese grape varieties, collected through national and international collaborations, including partnerships with Italian experts. These rare vines have undergone DNA verification and are now being cultivated and studied for their agronomic and oenological potential. The long-term goal is to formally register these varieties in Malta’s national grapevine registry, enriching the quality and diversity of Maltese wine.
