They thanked the public for their generous support.
Currently, local NGOs are fighting a green-lit project that will see further development of a restaurant at Dwejra. Following a call to arms online, BirdLife Malta, together with a number of other organisations, filed a court appeal against this decision this morning.
“Following the overwhelming support from the general public who donated more than €3,000 in two days, BirdLife Malta on behalf of the front of 15 organisations has today filed an appeal in court to challenge the decision of the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal,” the NGO said in a statement.
The crowdfunding initiative was launched earlier this month in the hopes of reaching the goal of €2,000, and was surpassed by over €1,000. #Yas!
The Dwejra area is a Natura2000 site, a Dark Sky Heritage Area, and a Special Protection Area under the EU’s Wild Birds Directive. This site is “one of the last places on the Maltese Islands where light pollution is at a minimum, and from where astronomical observations can be carried out,” BirdLife Malta said in their statement. Unfortunately, if the plans do go through, all this will be put at risk.
