Heritage Malta’s much-loved ‘Museums by Candlelight’ is back, and for the very first time, it’s taking over Valletta, with the added magic of live music and performances.
Mark your calendars for Saturday 21st June, when five of the capital’s most iconic sites will open their doors from 7:00pm till midnight, inviting the public to experience history, art, and architecture in the glow of candlelight.
This atmospheric event promises a cultural journey like no other, bringing Malta’s rich heritage to life with the soulful sounds of live musicians, creating an unforgettable ambience across the city.
Here’s what awaits on this special midsummer night:
National Museum of Archaeology
Step into Malta’s ancient past with artefacts from the Neolithic to the Phoenician era, including the Sleeping Lady, Venus of Malta, and the majestic Gran Salon. Set in the Auberge de Provence, the Gran Salon’s exquisite painted ceiling and baroque elegance will take over your senses with music from a live instrumental trio.
Grand Master’s Palace
Explore one of Malta’s most historically significant buildings, recently restored and more impressive than ever. Discover nine newly opened halls, once part of the Grand Master’s summer apartment, and admire the beautifully restored state carriage. The evening will be enriched by the smooth sounds of the Dominic Galea Jazz Quartet.
MUŻA – The National Community Art Museum
Wander through centuries of Maltese and European art in the stunning Auberge d’Italie. With works spanning the 15th to 21st century, from fine art to decorative pieces, MUŻA offers something for every art lover. The experience will be elevated by violinist Mario Ciantar, adding a serene musical backdrop to your visit.
St John’s Co-Cathedral
One of Malta’s crown jewels, the Baroque masterpiece will be seen in a new light – literally! Illuminated by candlelight, the Co-Cathedral's grandeur will take your breath away, from Mattia Preti’s ceiling frescoes to Caravaggio’s iconic ‘Beheading of St John the Baptist’, renowned as the only painting he ever signed.
Church of St Catherine of Italy
Opening to the public for the first time ever, this historic gem will now be part of the MUŻA experience. Designed by Girolamo Cassar for the Italian Knights, it stands as the only Hospitaller church still annexed to its original auberge.
Adding to the evening’s atmosphere, In Guardia re-enactors will parade through Valletta, bringing history to life. Catch them as they march from Fort St Elmo (7:00–8:30pm), station at the Grand Master’s Palace (8:30–10:00pm), and continue their journey through the capital.
General admission tickets – granting access to all five sites – are available for just €5. You can purchase them online at heritagemalta.mt/store, at any Heritage Malta museum or site, or on the night itself at the National Museum of Archaeology, Grand Master’s Palace, and MUŻA.
If you’re looking to infuse a midsummer night with some magic, history and art, don’t miss it!
