Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg today committed himself to ensuring open spaces across Malta and Gozo are better kept, while new ones are created.

In a joint Facebook post with Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government José Herrera and Mario Fava,  Transport Minister Ian Borg wrote that: "As the Maltese saying goes thorns bloom roses, and inspired by this proverb, we are announcing a project aimed at creating more open spaces in localities across Malta and Gozo for the enjoyement of the community."

"We want our village squares to become a hub where families can enjoy a walk in peace, assured that the area is safe for children. With Transport Malta's help, we'll be working to close off main roads and village squares during certain hours on specific days, with traffic deviated to adjacent streets," Minister Borg continued to explain.

Speaking of the benefits of such an initaitive, Minister Borg said that not only with this create a new experience for residents, but it ensures better air quality as well as aiding regional shops to get back on their feet. He also mentioned cultural highlights: "this could serve as a platform for artists to exhibit their talents in public, an occasion for entities and local clubs to put up musicals and theatre productions," he said.

Assuring the Ministry's commitment to assist in maintenance and beautification projects, as well as the planting of more trees, Minister Borg wrote: "We have to give life again to our villages because they are a reflection of who we are as a people - united, courageous and a living soul!" he concluded.

Has Malta finally learnt to love itself?

When she’s not having a quarter-life crisis, Caroline is either drawing in a café, frittering her salary on sushi or swearing at traffic in full-on Gozitan. There is also the occasional daytime drink somewhere in the equation. Or two. A creative must be allowed at least one vice.
