Mater Dei's Head of OBGYN talks pregnancy during COVID-19 pandemic - "You are topmost in our minds"
Mater Dei held a live Q&A on the subject.
In an ongoing live video with the Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mater Dei, Prof. Yves Muscat Baron says that during pregnancy, it doesn't seem that the baby is affected by the Coronavirus as they have seen.
He said that if a mother tests positive for COVID-19, they might have to separate the mother and baby to avoid transmission. "We are doing it for the best of the baby," he says.
Prof. Muscat Baron urges pregnant mothers to keep their appointments. He assures that they have reduced overcrowding by focusing on pregnancy alone as opposed to routine check ups. "You are topmost in our minds."
"Having COVID-19 is not a reason to have a C-section," he says. This method of delivery is only used if there are complications from a maternity point of view. He also noted that a birth partner can stay with the mother unless they are in quarantine or present symptoms. If there is the slightest risk of infection to mother, baby or hospital staff, a birth partner won't be allowed. "If we pull the same rope, I am sure we will get through this."
