Maltese athletes won the most medals at the inaugural edition of the Malta Invitational Games, held on the islands earlier this month.
This competition ran from 6th to 9th October and involved sports which are not a part of the programme of the forthcoming Games of the Small States of Europe 2023.
The sports played at the Invitational Games were bowling, taekwondo, and triathlon.
Maltese athletes took home a whopping 25 medals in total – seven gold, ten silver, and eight bronze. This put the islands in second place overall.
Cyprus finished first, having won 12 gold, two silver, and six bronze medals.
The inaugural edition of the Malta Invitational Games involved 180 athletes from Andorra, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Iceland, Luxembourg, Montenegro, San Marino, and of course, Malta.
Michela Scerri, Dennis Mercieca, Cynthia Frendo, Hannah Cutajar and Krista Kuusijarvi are some of the Maltese athletes that won gold medals.
“Well done to all athletes, thank you to our international friends for being part of this exciting journey - we are already looking forward to seeing you again next year,” the Maltese Olympic Committee wrote on social media.
