If you’re feeling cold today, it could be worse! Today, the 29th of January marks the 45th anniversary of the coldest temperature ever recorded in Malta since official measurements began by the Malta Meteorological Office.

On Thursday, 29th January 1981, thermometers dropped to a remarkable low of just 1.4°C, a record that still stands today and remains a reference point for extreme winter weather in Malta.

This historic event is often remembered by weather enthusiasts as a rare moment when the islands experienced conditions more typical of continental Europe than the central Mediterranean. Frosty mornings, icy winds, and widespread cold left a lasting impression on those who lived through it.

By comparison, the current winter of 2025/26 has been far milder. So far, the lowest temperature recorded this season has been 5°C, measured during the early hours of 13th January 2026.

While chilly spells still occur, the contrast highlights how exceptional the winter of 1981 truly was in Malta’s climate history.

Are you looking forward to colder temperatures this winter?
