The airport handed Julia a commemorative gift to mark this occasion.
This year has seen Malta’s airport continue on its journey of recovery from a COVID-19 induced slump – and this huge milestone is testament to that.
Just yesterday, Malta International Airport (MIA) took to social media to celebrate its five millionth passenger of the year, a woman called Julia Mercieca.
“Julia was greeted by our Head of Traffic Development upon arriving in Malta on Air Malta flight KM 613 from Rome, where she enjoyed a short holiday with her family,” the airport wrote.
“We would also like to extend our thanks to each of the five million passengers who travelled through MIA this year – we hope to see you all again sometime soon,” it concluded.
The airport went on to hand Julia a commemorative gift to mark this occasion.
More than half of the passengers that have travelled through MIA this year have done so throughout the peak summer months, i.e. from June to September.
Throughout this period, MIA welcome around 2.66 million passengers.
September, which welcomed just over 650,000 passengers, marked a pre-pandemic recovery rate of 86.4 per cent. Whilst July and August marked recovery rates of 86.3 per cent and 86.5 per cent, respectively.
