Malta's Adopt a Granny initiative unites adorable elderly duo & we can’t get enough!
A little help goes a long way.

We're so pleased to learn that the recently launched Adopt a Granny initiative at the Jasmine Nursing Home in Msida has been a resounding success, and the residents have benefitted from the scheme. The sweet idea was launched towards the end of 2018 to battle loneliness among the elderly community in Malta, and it seems to have worked!

The initiative encourages children and members of the public to visit the elderly, especially those who have no relatives. And in just a few weeks, the scheme has already put a bright smile on one man’s face. 78-year-old Michael Mifsud has no living relatives in Malta, and in time, became socially withdrawn. Then came Oscar Sammut. Mr Sammut’s wife lives in the same nursing home, and he had spoken to Mr Mifsud a few times while visiting his spouse. Mr Sammut heard of this wonderful initiative and through it, befriended Mr Mifsud!

According to a recent interview, the pair are like two peas in a pod, chatting about everything and taking trips to Valletta for a cup of joe and a walk. Mr Sammut also takes Mr Mifsud his papers, as well as his absolute favourite treat – a Kit Kat! The two head to Mr Mifsud’s important appointments together and enjoy reminiscing about the good old days... what a sweet duo!

We just love hearing about success stories like this! Want to be part of this awesome scheme? Contact the home directly on 2133 0707, or via www.jasminenursinghome.com.mt.
