The 2024–2025 precipitation year, spanning from September to August, brought mixed fortunes for the Maltese Islands. While total rainfall was below average for the second consecutive year, conditions improved significantly compared to last year’s drought.

In total, 457.8 mm of rain were recorded - 87.5 mm short of the climatic norm of 545.3 mm. This deficit is nearly equivalent to December’s average monthly quota. However, the improvement over the previous year was striking.

The 2023–2024 precipitation year registered only 249.8 mm, making it the second driest on record. This means that Malta received 208 mm more rainfall this year, a welcome recovery despite remaining under par.

Rainfall Malta

Month-by-month figures highlight the variability. Eight months registered below-average rainfall, with October 2024 being the biggest disappointment. Just 4.2 mm of rain were recorded that month, falling 73.4 mm short of the norm.

In contrast, February, March, May, and August delivered above-average totals. March stood out with 81.0 mm, 41.3 mm above its monthly quota, while May added 36.6 mm, more than double the norm.

Seasonal patterns followed expectations. Winter (December–February) proved the wettest, contributing 201 mm, while spring and autumn were nearly balanced with 121.2 mm and 124.8 mm respectively.

Summer remained the driest, but August brought a timely 10.8 mm of rainfall during the traditional mid-month showers known as għerejjex ta’ Santa Marija.

The wettest day of the year occurred on March 25th, when 34.4 mm fell within 24 hours. Regional differences were also notable: Msida topped the charts with 450.4 mm, while Xewkija saw the lowest at 324.0 mm.

Though still shy of average, the past year’s rainfall offered much-needed relief after 2023–2024’s historic drought.

Are you looking forward to the rainy season this year?
