Eurostat has just released some marriage-related statistics for EU countries, based on data gathered throughout 2020.

Let’s just say the results are somewhat interesting…

For starters, it looks like Maltese married couples are particularly happily married, as the country holds the record for the lowest divorce rates in the EU.

Malta registered 0.5 divorces per 1,000 persons, as opposed to countries like Latvia, Lithuania, and Denmark, which registered 2.7 divorces per 1,000 persons.

Malta’s seen a decline in its divorce rates in the past couple of years, as in 2019, Malta experienced 0.7 divorces for every 1,000 persons.

Having said that, Malta’s one of the six EU countries with the lowest rates of marriage.

Together with France, Malta reported a total of 2.2 marriages per 1,000 persons. The EU country with the least number of marriages was none other than Italy, which sees around 1.6 marriages for every 1,000 persons.

Hungary is the EU country with the highest marriage rate, recording a whopping 6.9 marriages per 1,000 persons.

Marriage rates in Malta stood at a much higher rate in 2019, with the country registering 5.3 marriages for every 1,000 persons.

The 2020 decline in marriages can be probably attributed to the postponement of countless ceremonies thank to the COVID-19 pandemic.
