Move over Gatwick! There’s going to be another big airport in town, because a master plan is in the works for the Malta International Airport and the surrounding area to be increased significantly, matching the capacity of London’s Gatwick.

Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi has stated that a collab with Malta Industrial Parks is underway to come up with a plan for the airport and the cluster of industries surrounding it. The master plan includes a new terminal building and the addition of seven parking spaces for aircraft on the field. He also revealed that the aim of this project is for the airport’s capacity to reach that of Gatwick in London.

As of late, the Malta Air Traffic Service has begun using a brand-new state of the art air traffic management system, following an €8 million investment. This system is the most modern one of its kind in Europe, having an extremely high safety standard to go with it! It’s so sturdy that operations continued even during the record-breaking storm (Hurricane Dnegel to you and me) last February.
