Look up! Don’t miss the 2025 Perseid meteor shower in Malta visible in the coming days
For the clearest view, escape light pollution and head to dark-sky spots like Fomm ir-Riħ or Dingli Cliffs.

Attention all night-sky lovers! One of the most spectacular celestial events of the year is about to light up Malta’s skies.

The Perseid meteor shower, famous for its dazzling display, will reach its peak between the nights of 12th and 13th August. Although a full moon appeared yesterday, on Sunday 10th August, astronomers still expect an impressive show in 2025.

The Perseids, active from mid-July to late August, come from tiny particles shed by the comet Swift–Tuttle, which circles the Sun every 133 years. Earth last crossed its path in 1992, and each summer, as our planet moves through this debris field, we’re treated to a cascade of bright streaks racing across the sky.

During peak conditions, viewers can see anywhere from 60 to 100 meteors per hour; sometimes more in exceptional years. For the clearest view, escape light pollution and head to dark-sky spots like Fomm ir-Riħ or Dingli Cliffs.

The meteors appear to burst from the constellation Perseus, giving the shower its name. Whether you’re planning a romantic night under the stars or a fun outing with friends, all you need are warm clothes, a comfy chair or blanket, and a little patience. Let your eyes adjust to the darkness for about 20 minutes, then watch the magic unfold.

So, will you be catching the 2025 Perseids?

11th August 2025
