Longer days, summer vibes & that stolen swim: why May is the best month to visit Malta
Come out of hibernation!

Melanie Drury

May is my favourite month in Malta. I consider it the best time of year to enjoy the best of Malta and, of course, I have a few reasons to share.

The longer days

Days grow longer between December and June and summertime starts at the end of March, making May a month where the sun sets later in the day. And longer days mean more time to enjoy the great outdoors in the beautiful weather!

The fine weather

Indeed, the weather begins to be a little more reliable, warm and sunny, yet it is still mild and comfortable compared to June, when summer kicks in, as does the sweltering heat. The sea is warming up, and there's plenty of space on the beach for some peace and quiet.

With glorious long days of fine weather, this is a time to indulge in outdoor activities. Unlike the summer, when the beach is the only place to cool down in the hot weather, the rest of the island is still green and it is begging to be enjoyed.

The increasing number of events

As early summer peeks in and people begin to emerge from their heated homes onto their warm doorstep, hibernation is officially coming to an end and the season of entertainment and events is kicking in!

Those summer vibes

The local festa season starts with a bang, its fireworks heralding Malta's summer vibes. Nightlife and beach life can be enjoyed without the throngs of tourists. There's excitement in the air for the new-found buzz of social life after winter's enforced hibernation.

The stolen swim

I promise you the sea is cold but bearable enough to be pleasurable and it really invites a dip, even if only a quick one. If you are too chicken to venture into the water, at least enjoy the beaches before they get crowded and savour the sun before it gets too hot!

May provides a happy medium, a time when there are no extremes and everything is perfectly balanced. What do you love to do this time of year?
