Lend a helping paw! This film about Malta’s stray cats needs your help to come to life
‘Cats of Malta’ seeks to celebrate Malta’s cat culture and explore the magical connection between the country’s human and feline population.

Benjamin Abela

Be it through politics, football, or feasts, us Maltese tend to be quite polarised on most topics, but there is one thing that breaks down all walls and brings us closer together – our love for cats.

After relocating to Malta from Australia back in 2017, Sarah Jayne Portelli and Ivan Malekin, the two halves of a filmmaking and cat-loving couple, were thoroughly impressed by the sheer size of the country’s stray cat colonies.

Of course, these colonies wouldn’t exist without the blood, sweat, and tears of Malta’s community of feeders, volunteers, and cat-lovers, therefore it seemed only natural for Ivan and Sarah Jayne to focus their next feature film on Malta’s stray cats and their countless human helpers.

The documentary ‘Cats of Malta’ seeks to celebrate Malta’s cat culture and explore the magical connection between the country’s human and feline population.

After months of hard work, Sarah Jayne (director and producer), Ivan (producer, editor, and cinematographer), and the crew of volunteers finished shooting the documentary, however now they require the public’s help to move onto the next phase – post-production.

That’s where you come in.

As of yet, the ‘Cats of Malta’ team has managed to raise just under 60 per cent of its $15,000AUD goal, which is set to cover sound design, licence fees, legal expenses, and colour grading, amongst other things.

But with only four days left before the fundraising campaign’s conclusion, this hard-working team of cat-lovers desperately needs your help to bring its dream to life!

Anyone who donates to this worthy cause can benefit from a plethora of goodies – we’re talking social media shout-outs, posters, photobooks, and even an executive producer credit (if you’re feeling super generous).
