Legendary ex-Sliema Wanderers player, Maurice Walsh, passes away aged 91
He was awarded ‘Gieh is-Sliema’ in 2017.

Today, Sliema Wanderers fans woke up to the terrible news that beloved former player Maurice Walsh passed away at the age of 91.

Maurice left an ever-lasting impact on Maltese football.

The late footballer player for Sliema Wanderers for a whopping 13 years – from 1949 to 1962 – over which period he scored 53 goals.

In 2017, Maurice received Sliema’s highest honour, Gieh is-Sliema, for his service towards the town’s football club.

Tributes have already started pouring for Maurice, as the Sliema Local Council and local presenter David Muscat mourned the footballer.

“Rest in Peace Maurice. A friend in football and billiards. The humility you had is rarely found in people anymore”, a friend of Maurice’s wrote.

“Thank you for your time with us”, Maurice’s nephew added.
