August 2026 could well have been Malta’s hottest August in at least a century, with average daytime temperatures reaching 3.5°C above the long-term norm.

According to data compiled by It-Temp Madwarna, the average maximum temperature throughout last month reached 35.1°C, compared with a 100-year climatic average of 31.6°C.

Night-time temperatures were also significantly warmer than usual, with an average minimum of 26°C, ie 3.4°C above the climatic average of 22.6°C.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was around 41°C on 26th August, during a late-summer heatwave, while the lowest minimum temperature was 25°C.

The sea also remained exceptionally warm, with average sea temperatures at 29.4°C, compared with a climatic average of 26.2°C, while not a single drop of rainfall was recorded throughout the month.
