Bringing nature to life! Wied Dalam transformed into a new green space at Għar Dalam
Wied Dalam has been given a new lease of life following an extensive restoration project, creating a new green space for visitors at Għar Dalam and Museum in Birżebbuġa.

The regeneration has focused on restoring the roughly 2,650-square-metre valley and strengthening the connection between Għar Dalam, its surrounding landscape and Malta’s natural and prehistoric heritage.
A key part of the project was the restoration of traditional rubble walls, a protected form of national heritage, together with the removal of invasive plant species and the introduction of native flora grown from local stock. A drip irrigation system has also been installed to support the plants during their early growth, helping create a suitable habitat for native birds, reptiles and insects.

The valley has also been made more accessible by clearing hazardous bricks and debris and creating a safe visitor route with pathways bordered by loose rubble stones. Elements of the site’s industrial heritage were preserved throughout the works, including 1950s NATO fuel pipes, which have been incorporated into the restored landscape.
Visitors can now explore the area at a more leisurely pace, with wooden benches and an open-air library providing spaces to sit, read and take in the surroundings.

The restored Wied Dalam forms an extension of the Għar Dalam visitor experience and offers a peaceful way to discover an area closely linked to some of the earliest evidence of life and human presence on the Maltese Islands.
Admission to the restored space is also free for eligible children and seniors holding a Heritage Malta Student or Senior Passport, including two accompanying adults.
