Attention theatre goers! We’ve got just the performance for you to pencil in next weekend! Get ready to jump into a retro futuristic version of Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange at this year’s ZiguZajg Festival, produced by Teatru Malta. Named Laringa Mekkanika – A Clockwork Orange, the spectacle will turn the classic into a Maltese language production, including a brand new soundtrack just for the occasion! How cool is that?!

TM

The star-studded spectacle brings together big names in the local theatre scene such as Jamie Cardona, Paul Portelli, Stephen Mintoff, Charlotte Grech, Monique Dimech Genius, Benjamin Abela, Mikhail Basmadjian and Isabel Warrington among others who will join forces will legendary director Sean Buhagiar to bring to life a story that doesn’t shy away from pain, violence, disgust, darkness and linguistic acrobatics. Intriguing, right?

Laringa Mekkanika – A Clockwork Orange

The text, originally written in English, has been professionally translated to Maltese by Wayne Flask to keep its original urgency while making it more current to the here and now of Maltese youth. But what’s it all about, you ask?

TM

Alex is a violent teenage who, together with his gang of troublemakers, commits a series of hate crimes and some pretty unsavoury acts, which are shocking to say the least. But just how far should we go in terms of education? Should the punishment be as extreme as the crime? How do we deal with such tough-skinned delinquents as Alex and his droogs?

The text attempts to answer the question: Can people become like automata, seeming to be as organic as an orange but actually functioning like a clockwork machine controlled by the state? Hits home, if you ask us.

TM

This exhilarating take of such a controversial novel is one that will have your brain buzzing from the action. Don’t miss your chance to see this incredible spectacle based on the 20th century novel which was infamously banned and has caused a great deal of discussion over the years.
