It’s World Blood Donor Day! Here’s everything you need to know about donating blood in Malta
Only three per cent of eligible people donate their blood.
Donating your blood is one of the greatest acts a person can do to help another fellow human in need. Millions of patients around the world need blood to survive surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and other forms of traumatic injuries – however this isn’t always readily available…
Unfortunately, only three per cent of eligible people choose to donate their blood so, on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, we’re listing everything you need to know about doing this heroic act in Malta, maybe you too can help those in need.
First and foremost, before heading to the donor centre, make sure to bring along some form of identification.
You can choose between a Maltese ID card, Maltese Driving License, Maltese Passport, e-Residence Card, or Diplomatic Card.
The prospective donor also needs to be in good health without having undergone any treatment for any serious conditions or illnesses. Those who are taking any form of medication or recently had any vaccines to go abroad are advised to call beforehand on 80074313 or on 22066201 to speak to the medical team.
Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old. If you’re still 17, your parents or guardians need to fill in a consent form which can be accessed here.
The maximum age for blood donation is 65 years, however, those who have been donating regularly during their life can go on donating until they reach 70.
Male blood donors also need to be at a weight of at least 50kg, whilst females weighing between 50kg to 65kg have to have their minimum required weight be calculated according to their height. This is done in order to make sure that there is ample blood volume.
Women can also donate every four months (every three months if post-menopausal) whilst men can donate every three months.
It’s also best to avoid wearing any tight clothing and to eat a good meal before donating – including plenty of water. Alcohol and junk food should be avoided completely.
Individuals who have been recently tattooed or pierced can only donated blood four months after doing so.

Where can I go to donate my blood?
There are two different blood donation stations around the Maltese islands:

This blood donation centre is open every day from 8am to 6pm.
- Gozo Xewkija Berga
Gozitans can donate blood at the Xewkija Health Centre, open for blood donations every alternate Sunday between 8:30am and 1pm, and every alternate Tuesday between 1pm and 5pm.
There’s also the blood mobile unit that can be available to volunteer organisations upon request.
