Wow! Historic Main Guard in Valletta restored to former glory with cultural transformation ahead
Heritage Malta has announced that restoration works on the façade and portico of the Main Guard are nearing completion reinstating in the process the 19th century two tone colour scheme of the portico façade overlooking St George’s Square in Valletta.
Situated opposite the Grand Master’s Palace, the Main Guard dates back to the late 16th century and has served various military functions over the centuries. During the British period, it was transformed architecturally with the addition of a neoclassical portico, giving the building much of its present-day appearance.
The restoration project has focused on both the internal and external fabric of the structure. Works included the refurbishment of timber apertures and beams, waterproofing, and extensive plastering and painting, all carried out in line with strict conservation standards.
Particular attention was given to restoring the portico, where damaged elements were repaired while preserving the original stonework. Historic features such as the clock, wrought-iron lanterns, and British coat of arms were also carefully conserved.
A key highlight of the project is the reinstatement of the building’s 19th-century two-tone colour scheme, based on detailed research and historical photographs. Inside, previously hidden murals painted by British soldiers have been restored, with more discoveries currently under conservation.
Once completed by 2027, the Main Guard will open as a dynamic cultural attraction, featuring immersive experiences that showcase Malta’s rich history, bringing new life to a landmark long closed to the public.
