The Maltese population are among the worst in Europe when it comes to exercising daily. Recent stats published by Eurostat show that around 28 per cent of the European Union population aged 16 or over did not engage in enough physical activity in 2017. And Malta was well above this average. Here are the latest statistics.

1. Exactly 47.8 per cent of Maltese respondents said they performed zero hours of exercise in a week.

2. In a typical week, 27 per cent of the EU population exercised for up to 3 hours.

3. 17 per cent of the EU population did some form of exercise between three to five hours and 28 per cent did five hours or more.

4. Locally, 1.9 per cent of the Maltese population performed less than an hour of exercise and 30.6 per cent exercised between one to three hours per week.

5. On the other hand, 13.6 per cent of Malta’s citizens exercised between three and five hours, while 6.2 per cent exercised for 5 hours or more.

6. This means that only 52.3 per cent of the Maltese population engage in some form of physical activity.

7. The highest rate of physically active respondents was found in Romania, ranking at 96 per cent.

8. Portugal and Croatia’s exercising average were both below the 50 per cent marking, ranking at 45 per cent and 36 per cent respectively.

Time to step up our game, perhaps?
