I must have been eight or nine when I bought my mum her first ever Mother’s Day gift. Coins rattling in my pocket, I had walked to the nearest market in Valletta and scoured the stalls for something I thought she would like. Why ever I picked a lacy doily for a woman who, though house proud, thought ‘things for the house’ were an insult to feminism, I’ll never know. But that is what I paid for, proudly wrapped up and presented as a thank you for the years of hugs, tea and unconditional love. It was never going to live up to expectations. Luckily, today, years on, I know much better. Here are five flower shops which will help brighten any woman’s day.

1. Floreal, Naxxar

Located on the high street going up to the parish church, Floreal is not just a flower shop. It is an institution, its shop front drawing the eye with bright blossoms, vibrant fronds and quaint potted plants. Inside, the large space is teeming with unique pieces – at various prices – but it’s the on-site floral service which has clients coming back week-after-week. 

2. Qronfla, Mosta and Balzan

This local favourite overflows with blooms come mid-May – and, really, at all other times of the year. Flower basket arrangements as well as vivid bouquets are available in-store or, if you don’t have time to actually head there, you can even order online, with delivery available across the island.

3. F. Zammit Garden Centre, Qormi

The issue with flowers is they fade away pretty quickly, unless you have those elusive magic green fingers. F. Zammit Garden Centre may provide a solution, however, with their offering of house plants and vivid orchids. They may need some tending to, but you can be assured they will last for (some) time. 4. Alistair Floral Design

Specialising principally in wedding décor and flower arrangements, this florist also offers up individual bouquets for special occasions. And, while they’re not known to be the cheapest supplier in town, they do offer a wide selection of gifts – anything, from herbal pots to traditional roses - for every occasion. 5. Flower Zone Nurseries, Sannat, Gozo

Based in Gozo – making it easier for those of us on our sister isle – Flower Zone Nurseries organises deliveries throughout the week and even on Saturdays, perfect for those who, like me, leave everything to the last minute!  The choices available online range from a bouquet of blue roses to a seasonal bunch or, if you prefer a bit of a surprise, you can simply leave it up to the florist themselves to select the best blooms for your mum.
