It’s in! Malta set to becomes first European country to legalise cannabis for personal use
President George Vella must sign the bill into law for it to come into effect.
Malta’s just made national and European history…
Moments ago, the country’s parliament voted in favour of a reform allowing users to purchase, grow, and buy their own cannabis for recreational reasons.
All of the Labour Party’s MPs voted in favour of the bill, whilst all of the Opposition’s MPs voted against it. This allowed the law to pass with a majority of 36 votes against 27.
For the new bill to come into effect, President George Vella must sign it into law. This is expected to take place in the coming days.

So what does this new law mean exactly?
Basically, as soon as the bill is signed into law, anyone aged 18 and over will be allowed to legally carry a maximum of seven grams of cannabis.
It will also be possible for users to legally grow up to four cannabis plants at home and thus store a maximum of 50g of cannabis in their household.
Having said that, users will still not be allowed to smoke cannabis in public…

In fact, users caught smoking in public or in front a minor will be fined €235 and €500 respectively.
If you want to get your hands on some cannabis, you’ll have to do this through specific cannabis associations that will be allowed to distribute drugs or seeds to their members.
These associations will be allowed to sell a maximum of seven grams of the drug per day to a single member.
Members are limited to purchasing a maximum of 50g of cannabis per month.
