Is it Malta or the moon? 8 Maltese roads that are in need of some major TLC
They’re the worst!

Jillian Mallia

If you’re Maltese, you know what I’m talking about. If you’re not, and haven’t lived here for that long, you’re about to. The state of some of Malta's roads has become a running joke among locals, to the point of (almost) being endearing. Thankfully though, something's finally being done about it, and Government will be resurfacing about 170 roads this year! Until that happens though, here's just a fraction which need some major TLC! #IsmaghnaGuz

1. Triq Il- Wied, Hal-Balzan

This street pains both me and my poor car. It's gotten pretty bad over the years and authorities are finally doing something about it. But (as per Maltese timelines), it’s taking an age to finish and, quite honestly, the light at the end of the tunnel couldn’t come sooner!

2. Triq San Patrizju, Birzebbugia

Lord hear our prayers. Every time we pass through this street, our cars rattle and shake, leading us to hold onto the steering wheel for dear life, hoping and praying that nothing comes loose in the process!

3. Triq il-Ferrovija l-Qadima, Birkirkara

The train used to pass through this road back in the day, hence the name. But train or not, it's full of humps and bumps!

4. Triq Delimara, Marsaxlokk

Oh boy, this one’s bad. Triq Delimara takes you from the quaint Tas-Silg church up to Delimara Point and St Peter’s Pool. But, by Jove, it’s a nasty one! Tip: drive slowly and try to avoid the potholes at all costs!

5. Triq il-Fuhhar, Mosta

Wanted a trip to the moon? You’ve got it here – guaranteed! One pothole is bigger than the other and you’ve got to swerve to avoid them all. It’s been this way for over 25 years and, finally, the road and its surrounding are about to receive some TLC. Hallelujah!

6. Triq l-Ingilterra, Sghajtar Naxxar

Do you hear that? That’s just another thing that’s rattling in my car because of our roads! Put your vehicle into first gear and go up slowly to avoid the bumps and potholes. But let’s face it, that’s kind of impossible.

7. Triq Naxxar, Birkirkara

Lord, give me strength. This road is so damaged that driving above 40km/h will almost guarantee a puncture! Get ready to slow it right down and swerve to avoid the craters.

8. Triq Hal-Tarxien, Tarxien

This one's an utter nightmare. The narrow, yet main road in Tarxien has deep dents along the entire street. My car rattles like there’s no tomorrow when I pass through. Luckily though, works to resurface this road are already underway. Hurrah!
