Sunday 18th May marks International Museum Day, and Heritage Malta is inviting everyone to celebrate with free admission to a selection of its sites across the Maltese Islands. This special occasion offers the opportunity to delve into Malta's rich history and culture without any cost – keep your cash for the ice-cream breaks!

Valletta – The National Museum of Archaeology

Housed in the beautiful Auberge de Provence, this museum is a treasure trove of prehistoric artefacts – from Neolithic to early Phoenician relics. It’s a must-visit if you’re curious about how Malta’s ancient story began.

Three Cities & Harbour Region – Malta Maritime Museum

Step into Malta’s seafaring legacy with the exhibition 'An Island at the Crossroads' at the historic Naval Bakery. Expect sails, sea charts, and centuries of maritime stories.

Rabat, Mdina & North Region – The National Museum of Natural History

Explore the wonders of the natural world in this elegant 18th-century palace in the Silent City. From fossils to butterflies, it’s a brilliant stop for curious minds of all ages.

Gozo – All Ċittadella Sites

If you find yourself on the sister island that day, the Ċittadella in Victoria hosts several notable sites:

  • Gozo Museum of Archaeology: Showcasing artefacts from Gozo’s prehistoric periods through the medieval era.
  • Gran Castello Historic House: Offering insights into the daily life of 18th and 19th-century inhabitants.
  • Gozo Nature Museum: Focusing on the island’s natural environment and biodiversity.
  • Old Prison: Featuring well-preserved cells and historical graffiti left by inmates.

So, what are you waiting for? Normal hours apply and no booking required - just grab your friends, your kids, or your camera, and get exploring! With so many sites to choose from, you’re bound to uncover something interesting (and probably snap a few great pics too).
