Located in the heart of Żurrieq, the historic Xarolla Windmill stands as one of Malta's most remarkable cultural treasures. Built in the 18th century, this beautifully preserved landmark is among the few traditional windmills that still retain much of their original wooden machinery, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the island's engineering heritage.

More than 250 years ago, long before electricity transformed daily life, the Xarolla Windmill played an essential role in supporting the local community. Powered entirely by the wind, its enormous sails turned a complex system of wooden gears that drove millstones to grind grain into flour. This process provided a vital food source for families across the region, making the windmill an indispensable part of everyday life.

Today, the Xarolla Windmill remains a powerful reminder of Malta's ingenuity, resilience, and rich agricultural history. Its carefully preserved mechanisms continue to fascinate history enthusiasts, students, and visitors eager to discover how communities once relied on renewable wind power to meet their basic needs.

As one of Żurrieq's most cherished landmarks, the windmill is more than just a historical monument—it is a symbol of local identity and pride.

Have you ever seen the Xarolla Windmill in Zurrieq?
