Impressive! Three towns across Malta set up massive candle lit displays for Holy Week
A beloved Holy Week tradition!

Emma Galea

As part of the Holy Week activities happening in Malta, many villages and towns across the islands take on the challenge of finding ways to turn their locality into a spiritual haven.

In fact, there are at least three places across the country who have built huge candle lit structures in their squares.

They are using hundreds if not thousands of candles to create quite an impressive spiritual atmosphere.

In Maltese they are traditionally known as a Mixgħela or Fjakkolata.

Valletta:

Valletta’s candle lit structure almost completely covers the entirety of St George Square and depicts the cross on Golgotha Hill.

Fgura:

Planning to debut it later tonight, Fgura are promising to make this year’s structure even larger and better than last year’s.

Siggiewi:

Not only does Siggiewi set up a stunning candle lit display in their main square, they also put up a massive candle lit cross on a nearby hill.
