The Maltese cross, recognised by its eight distinct points, carries a rich history and deep symbolism. Initially known as ‘the cross of St. John,’ its name changed to ‘the cross of Malta’ when the Order of St. John relocated to Malta in 1530. This move marked a significant chapter in the Order’s history, cementing the cross's association with the island nation.

Each point of the Maltese cross holds symbolic significance. The eight points represent the Beatitudes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, emphasising virtues such as humility, mercy, and purity of heart. These Beatitudes guide the moral and spiritual conduct of those affiliated with the Order.

Additionally, the eight points symbolise the eight obligations or aspirations of the knights: to live in truth, have faith, repent of sins, give proof of humility, love justice, be merciful, endure persecution, and despise death. These virtues encapsulate the knights' commitment to their faith and their duty to aid the sick and the poor.

Moreover, the eight points also represent the Langues, or historical administrative divisions, of the Order. These Langues include Provence, Auvergne, France, Aragon, Castile, Italy, Germany, and England, reflecting the international nature of the Order and its members’ diverse origins.

The Maltese cross remains a powerful emblem, symbolising the enduring values of the Order of St. John and its legacy in Malta. Its eight-pointed design continues to represent the principles of courage, honour, and service that have guided the Order for centuries.
