How healthy are the Maltese? Malta ranks among top five in Eurostat health statistics
7 in 10 Maltese people perceive their health to be good.
According to Eurostat statistics, 75 per cent of Malta’s population aged 16 or over perceived their health as good or very good in 2017. And while we're not sure that reflects reality, here’s what the stats had to say!
1. Malta is in fifth place overall
Malta is behind Ireland (83 per cent), Cyprus (78 per cent), Italy and Sweden (both at 77 per cent), and the Netherlands (76%).
2. These five countries didn’t seem to think on the same lines
Lithuania and Latvia (both 44 per cent), Portugal (49 per cent), Estonia (53 per cent), Poland and Hungary (both 59 per cent) were at the bottom of the classification.
3. The majority of people think they are in good health
Stats show that seven out of 10 people over the age of 16 perceived their health to be good or very good in 2017, with only one in 10 people rating their health as bad or very bad.
4. The men vs women stat
More men than women (72 per cent) across Europe perceived their health to be good, compared to 67 per cent of women.
5. The male perspective
More than 88 per cent of the male population aged between 16 and 144 perceived their health to be good while the rating decreases to 69 per cent for men aged between 45 and 64, and further declines to 45 per cent for men older than 65 years.
6. The female perspective
87 per cent of women aged between 16 and 44 perceived their health to be good compared to 65 per cent for those aged 46 to 64 and a lesser amount of 39 per cent for those aged 65 years or over.
