Hooray, it's Aussie all the way! Here are 6 ways to celebrate Australia Day in Malta
26th January marks Australia Day: the official national day of Australia, which marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships in Port Jackson. While it has nothing to do with Malta, many Maltese-Australians celebrate the day on the islands, and just because you're far from the land Down Under, that doesn't mean you can't celebrate! Here are some fun things you can do to celebrate Australia Day in Malta.
The obvious: stuff your face!
Start off with a case of beer
Beer is a must for Aussie Day. Yep, a beer needs to be in your hand at all times, and there are no ifs or buts about it!
Fire up the barbie!
Ok, seeing as the weather isn't so great right now, you may need to improvise. Grab a grill and fry up some good old sausages and burgers for your make-shift Aussie barbie!
Attempt a Tim Tam Slam
Tim Tams, a gorgeous Aussie chocolatey treat, have made it to our islands thanks to places like Dylan’s House of Candy, so you can really join in the fun the Australian way: grab a hot cuppa, nibble the ends of your Tim Tam and use it as a straw. And as we say in Maltese, għidli x’int tiekol!
Fun activities to try:
Sports tournament
Get that sports gear ready and head to your favourite pitch for a kick about with your mates. If you want to go full-on Aussie, play a game of cricket or touch footy, but let’s face it, us Maltese know jack about these sports, so we’ll probably resort to the footie. Hey, it's great exercise, too!
Deck yourself out in Australia gear
If you’re a die-hard Aussie patriot, now's the time to get your Australia flags out, splash on some red, white and blue, and throw on a hat from Down Under to complete your Aussie look. #represent
A chill movie day
Not in the mood for a rowdy time? You can still celebrate! Stay home, choose a movie, pop that popcorn and have a relaxing time. Mad Max, Strictly Ballroom and Muriel’s Wedding are top Aussie movie choices for you to binge on!
