No one likes a good joke like the Maltese - as long as they're not the butt of them, yet (delightfully) sarcastic humour tends to go undervalued. Now, one new Instagram page is attempting to popularise this style through their own reinterpretation of viral social media phenomenon @dudewithsign.
Creating minor protests out of seemingly insignificant situations, page curators Sarah and Connor, who operate under the handle @maltesewithsign, provide a similar vision but with a very Maltese twist.
One sign posed a commentary on TimeToEat’s infamous advert featuring top local influencer Sarah Zerafa. The advert, whose first lines were “hungry and fancying take away?” was one of the page’s first casualties with the sharp clapback: “Yes Sarah, I am always hungry and fancying take away.”
Another photo offered a cheeky suggestion to X Factor Malta producers with the sign reading: “Make Chiara an X Factor judge.” Known for her powerhouse vocals, the post refers to Maltese Eurovision legend Chiara Siracusa, who famously ranked 3rd and 2nd place in the 1998 and 2005 Eurovision song contests respectively. Despite earning a lowly 22nd place at the 2009 final, she remains one of the most respected local artists.
There are also some serious comments made, with a photo addressing an extremely popular (yet highly illegal trend) of parking haphazardly to quickly purchase some snacks: “pastizzi are not a good reason to break the law.”
The page may have only just been launched, with limited photos available, but it's enough to get us hooked.
We can't wait for more!
